Ready or not, hurricane season is less than one month away. Today kicks off Hurricane Preparedness Week and the best time to make sure you are prepared is before the season starts on June 1. We have put together a checklist of things you should do BEFORE hurricane season begins.
Hurricane Preparedness Checklist
- Put together an Emergency Kit: Create a basic emergency kit with supplies such as water, flashlights, batteries and a first aid kit.
- Check Emergency Equipment: Check and perform any needed maintenance on equipment such as generators and storm shutters.
- Review Your Insurance Policies: Take some time to review your coverages and deductibles. Do you have wind and hail coverage? Do you have flood coverage? Do you have a hurricane deductible vs. a regular deductible? If you are unsure, be sure to reach out to your insurance agent for clarification.
- Know Your Zone: Depending on where you live in Louisiana, you may need to evacuate for even a weak hurricane. Folks residing outside of the levee protection system are more vulnerable to storm surge flooding so follow the guidance of local officials if an evacuation is ordered.
- Make An Evacuation Plan: In the event that you and your family will need to evacuate for a storm, you need to know where you will go, how you will get there, and how you will stay in touch with friends and family once the storm has passed. Take the time to sit down with your family and write out your plan. Put the written plan in a safe place for when it may be needed.
